The environment was one of the key local issues in the recent council elections with all major party's saying that Energy Auditing of council services and the installations of renewable energies would be an important step in reducing green house gas emissions.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council covers an area of 3,127 km2 with a population of approximately 300,000 and growing at a rate of 3.4% per year.
